Cleaning grout?
      #871365 - 03/14/10 08:12 PM

Repaired some broken tile for a customer. Now, new grout next to old grout........well, you know. Now she wants to know what I'd charge to clean the rest of the grout. So, I'm looking for grout cleaning suggestions before I commit, which will only happen if I don't have to do it on my hands and knees. Those days are gone.

When I clean the grout in my small tiled shower, I always have the best luck with bleach. I've used one of those bleach pens and they work fine but run out of solution quickly. I've taken to re-filling it with liquid bleach from my wife's laundry area. Too runny, but, as long as I restrict it to mainly the walls, it's OK. Seems to put the cleaner right where it needs to be. Be aware of strong odors if you use bleach. I let it sit for quite a while, then, scrub it with a softish brush.

It's a pain, but, it's my shower so I'm responsible for keeping it clean.

Bob.

That might work in my situation, but it sounds like you might be solving a mildew problem, since it's the shower. I have to clean dirty floor grout in a kitchen.

The tile pros will likely have "the answer", but in two similar situations I took the graphite from a pencil and rubbed it into the new grout... Made it match by making it look old.

No idea if your colors will permit this.

There is a grout bit made for Dremels. You'd use a base and set the bit depth accordingly to go at it and cut out the old grout. Then, you add new grout and a sealer. Adding a thin layer of new grout over the old stuff is a waste of time. It won't stick properly.

comet (it has bleach in it and is a bit abrasive) and a toothbrush. rinse well, seal the grout when dry.

Well, depends on how much you want to please your customer cause cleaning grout is definatly one of those knee things. Similar to Frans method I use a paste made out of Bon Ami and bleach to scrub away the grime with, then seal. Bon Ami won't scrath the adjacent tile. Course you can also color the entire grout to match instead. Here's a previous thread with the details.
