Furnace Noise and Poor Flame
      #51883 - 11/29/01 12:52 PM

I just bought a house with a 1997 American Standard furnace. It heats fine, but boy does it shout! Usually, after it has warmed up a bit it starts to squeal and rattle so loudly it wakes me up. It sounds almost like there is something in there, but all I can think of is that it is a bearing. Any ideas? How hard will it be to fix? Also, the inspector said the flame color was poor. How can I fix that? Thanks

You do not have the tools to fix this incorrect flame. A poor color means that the flame is not bright, almost white. You can easily add more air than necessary making the problem just as bad or worse with unburned fuel.

Ask a burner technician to inspect and adjust the flame to factory specifications using a combustion test kit. The rumbling, and rattling will go away.
