Bill,I need another head. We have this old Ford pickup at work that's been off the road for years, used for plowing and sanding the private roads. It sits all summer, then I fire it up late fall and hope for the best. When it runs good,it runs good. It's a rust bucket to the max but does the job. Last week I went out,put a fresh battery in it,and fired it up. Started like it had just been run. Sigh of relief. I drove it to the shop, when all of a sudden it started puking and backfiring to beat H***. Acted just like an engine with water in the tank. The c/convertor got cherry red after a little while,so I shut it down. Pulled the filter, and pumped some into a container. No water. I don't have a tester for the system because I don't work on vehicles any more. So I used the test light method. I jumped from the small lead to the proper terminal on the connector, then from the connector the battery with the light. I got a solid light for way to long, then the light just went out,and I never got any codes out of it after that. Tried a couple more times to no avail. We just bought a new/used Chevy 3500 with plow and sander to replace/compliment it,so fixing it isn't a priority, but I hate defeat. Any idea why(lets assume my connections were correct, which they were)the test port isn't working? Could the computer be bad? I DID have a camaro once that acted almost identically, and it did have a bad one. It runs like a champ for the first few minutes, then starts to act up,just like the Camaro did. I'm probably better off sending it to that great Ford graveyard in the sky!!!

. . Well, it HAS been parked all summer (ish).....
The RED cat indicates very rich running....so starting from the beginning,
Starts well.....good.....technically, running on "choke".... after a few minutes, engine warms, and brain sez, "let's try closed loop mode" obviously leaner mixture, etc.
But if it remains in 'choke' or rich mixture, it's obviously gonna act up.
Getting back to the sitting all summer part, I wonder if you've got a squirrel stuffed in the intake / airbox / filter.....????
Take a look at all the intake tubes for fuzz / nuts / house building, etc.

Fresh fuel maybe? Not the problem, but it won't hurt.
First thought is a failed cat. If its a beater, cut it off and see if that helps.
Is there oxygen sensors tapped in the exhaust?

Yeah, thought of all the obvious hiding places, and checked them. I thought of the O2 sensor, but it was late Friday and starting to rain. I had it behind the shop, couldn't get it around front to get it inside,so let it go until Monday. I'll fight with the sensor then. Thanks for the suggestions. May be lookiing for more next week.

Too bad you missed the "Cash for Clunkers Contest".

Haha, yeah!!! No,this gem has been off the road for several years. This used to be the scenario until recent years: A truck is bought for the Super. He drives it until it's worn out. The truck is passed down and used for whatever, around the course, running for parts, and for plowing with a 2 yard sander in the bed. Eventually it's not road worthy any more, and taken off the road, and used on the course. This old girl has just about reached the end of it's life, due to sand and salt abuse over the winters. We sand/salt heavily here on the 3 miles of private roads and large parking lot. It really takes a toll on the under parts of the trucks. We just recently upgraded from a 2004 Chevy pickup(traded in)to a 2009 for the Super, and bought a very well cared for 2002 Chevy 3500 dump with v-plow and sander to replace a dump that was stolen in the late spring. We now have a new board of governors with some sense. We're going to trade vehicles more often before they lose their value. You wouldn't believe how little sense wealthy people have in situations like this. They seem to think everything we have will last forever and they have a mechanic that's a wizard that can keep them running well beyond their boneyard due date. I'm pretty good, but not that good!! All my bosses have told me I repair to well. You try to save a buck and end up losing much more.
