Hey guys. Just got a question: Can I dvd drive somehow forget how to read dvds and decide to only read cds, and if so, can you change it back? My dvd drive won't read or even find any dvd I put in there but it will cds. The drive itself does show up in My Computer and when I went to check the system information it lists my dvd as a CD-Rom. The model is a Sony DVD RW-U12A. My system specs are Win Xp SP3, 1gb Ram...The dvd has no region protection according to a program I ran. I havn't installed or redone anything on the computer/drives except the windows updates. Also tried a system restore to an earlier point but to no avail. Or does this just mean that the laser is done for? I'm just curious since the System info lists it as a cd-rom now. Thanks for your time.
Edit: Forgot to mention that last week I disabled the drive, restarted, and it worked for awhile until I restarted again and since then it hasn't worked.

Thanks for the info. Not sure where to go with it though. I could find any updates in the firmware for this drive, and all my drivers are the latest ones for this drive.
Here's the info I got from the discInfo program, not sure if it's helpful.

Edit: Just did another scan and the info changed a little bit. Seems now there is no Region protection? Hmmm....

Can't guarantee it will remedy your problem, but when I've had problems with optical devices acting up, as a last resort, I've reinstalled the firmware with good results. See: http://www.soft32download.com/software/S...d-details.html. Good luck.

Don't know why the text of my first post disappeared; but it used to say that: Some drives don't play well with some old boards, depending upon whether the drive is on the first or second EIDE cable and what the dip switches say. Windows can pick up the drives the right way in spite of that sometimes and then change whether it 'sees' them again later.

Thanks so much for your time, guys. I have one more quick question: I have another computer which is waiting for a power supply (so, it's not used). I was wondering if I could take the dvd player in that one and replace the one in my Sony (which is acting up) without complications? Both computers are from the same year, but the other one is an HP. Since I don't have any installation cds or anything, if I just replaced the dvd players using the same cables, etc. will that cause problems? Or is it a straight shot, just replace one with the other, then restart? Never really done this before. Thanks.

DEPENDS ... physically it's easy.
As above, getting the cables and dip switches to work together can be the bother. Might be some driver issues as well, - or not. The problem could be the cable set-up, so just swapping could leave the same result - or not.

But switching them out will not cause my computer to say, not start up, or me having to go in and change a bunch of things just so it would start up right? I figure if I switch them out and restart, it will read the new dvd and just bring up windows?

Windows should still start fine, yes.
DVD drives aren't particularly fancy as far as drivers go, they just need a fairly standard driver so windows shouldn't have a problem installing the driver.
