In a couple of the rooms I am wiring I intend to have receptacles and lighting on the same circuit. The ideal way to do it I think would be to branch off from receptacles up to switches rather than run up to the switch boxes then back and over to the next outlet. I am wondering what the best way to do this would be. Obviously I would have to use a deeper box to accommodate the extra wires. My question is would it be better to splice wires or would it be better to pigtail to only the bottom screws of the receptacle and then use the top screws for the supply to the switch and if splicing would it be better to tap into the source wires or outgoing or does it not matter at all.

If you are going to pigtail then I would only use one connction on the receptacle. Put all the wires together with one pigtail for the receptacle.

Is that the best way to do it, twist all the black, white and ground wires together and just connect to the outlet with one of each or is it better to use all the screws on the receptacles. What way is most common and acceptable. Just to be clear what I want to do is power a switch from an outlet and also continue the circuit to other outlets. In that one box there will be 3 12-2 wires; the source, the feed to the switch, and the one that continues the circuit to other receptacles.

I would wire nut the incoming and the outgoing to the other outlet, as well as the tap. then, add a pigtail for the outlet you have. Be sure the wire nuts you use are rated for 4 #12. As for the grounds, they get twisted together or crimp-sleeved.
