Ball bat rack

Looking at this rack:

I'm thinking of making something similar to this for the daughters' softball league. My idea was just to hold the bats, not the balls also.

1) What type of wood to use? Would like them to last as long as possible in the elements of the uncovered dugout.

2) What would be "safest" width (protruding from fence) for the lower section? Needs to hold bats but not so wide that kids keep walking into it. 3 inches?

3) would like to secure it to fence so that vandals can't walk away with them. Toggle bolt probably best way?

4) Best way to secure the horizontal section to the vertical section?

I'm not sure about all your questions.

Outdoors for something like this is tough. Depending on how well you want it to look, you could try deck boards, but
you'll get a lot of movement in them as the temp and weather condition changes. Cedar may be too soft for the bats that get pulled off and on. I think I would use 5/4 treated deck boards if I was going to do it in a fully exposed area.

Good luck

Perhaps the composite deck boards? Mounting? I dunno... maybe some tamper proof bolts/screws?

Construction'll be up to someone else.... I'd be tempted to put the hanger on top, the backboard beneath, and use steel brackets to join them. If a 400# bubba can't jump on it, it'll be destroyed in a month.

Mounting it: Use U-bolts (muffler clamps) and spoil the threads after the nuts are cinched down (bugger the threads such that the nuts cannot be unscrewed, use hammer, pliers, etc.) or tack weld the nuts to the threads.
