The irony was almost too perfect. Last summer, Amazon discovered that some of its customers had bought an electronic version of George Orwell's 1984 published by a company that didn't own the copyright. Amazon's solution was to reach electronically into its customers' Kindles and delete the book. Many customers said that it was as if the novel's Big Brother had come to life. But the incident revealed something that many Kindle owners hadn't fully understood before: They don't own their Amazon e-books; they rent them. What customers are buying is a license granted by Amazon to read copyrighted material. And Amazon can revoke that license pretty much whenever it wants. Although Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos apologized to customers and promised to make better decisions in the future, Amazon's terms of service haven't changed. The company still claims the right to delete books from customers' Kindles whenever it sees fit.

That's a new kindle thing to me. I wasn't even aware that Kindle thing existed before.

I don't believe it, a techie like you, LOL. Now if Dennis said that.........
They are talking about those things replacing books, that has a lot of people upset.
We were subscribed to the Alanta Journal Constitution and being in an outlying area they stopped home delivery here but you can get the complete paper online which my wife does reluctantly. She likes her morning paper which she read "cover to cover".
Certainly cuts distribution expenses, no papers, no trucks, no delierery people, no gas expense. I'm sure they'd like to expand that.

That's what bugs me about digital media of any sort.
When I buy the CD, it's my CD. Same applies to DVDs and books.
The same should apply to digital media.
If I buy a song, it should be mine. Sure, the copyright doesn't belong to me, but I paid for the 1s and 0s and I should have full rights to use it on any device capable and should be able to copy it for my own personal use infinitely many times. That's the main benefit of digital; it can be copied with no generational loss.
Don't get me started on DRM. DRM is complete bullshit.
We are in a period of time where the law is still catching up to companies that are trying to abuse consumers and are trying to restrict the rights of consumers.
I hope, in time, the law comes down hard on some of these companies.

DRM is retarded, and will never work well.
I've used the "you get the license not the ownership" thing to my advantage before. I've returned damaged CD's to the labels and demanded replacements at a nominal fee ($2). I've gotten replacement cd's for DRM'd ones that skipped in my player too (Radiohead, HTTT).
This episode with the 1984 book is really ironically spooky, though.... Hard to believe it's an "accident".
