sagging wood door
      #847731 - 11/02/09 12:49 PM

I have 2 8 ft by 3 ft wood doors that meet in the middle on an outside patio enclosure. Both doors are saggiing (stiles slipping down from the rails). There is at least a one inch differance in the height at the middle where the doors meet (as opposed to the hinge side). The opening is square, the hinges are plumb. How can I shore up and repair these out of square doors? I think I can bring them back to square with 2 pipe clamps, but how can I support them when they're rehung? I can screw in outside supports (plates), but will it work? Any ideas?
Thanks!

Traditionally, shed and barn doors often have a cable and a turnbuckle strung from hinge side top corner to the far bottom corner. Tensioning the cable with the turnbuckle holds the door square.

Did this with my own shed door. Works fine if you can deal with it aesthetically.

If the doors have stiles and rails, and are mortised, remove the doors, make them square with pipe clamps, and pin all 4 corners of each door with 2 dowels...

That is how Dad taught me to do them. I have also seen doors with the cable and turnbuckle arrangement .

Thanks, I never thought about dowels. Your Dad's a genius!!!! (But the turnbuckle is a good idea and works too- makes me think of the screen door at Lassie's house)

One note about the turnbuckles. Depending on the amount of 'correction' needed, it might be wise to put a turnbuckle on both the front and backside.
Putting on only 1 can cause the door to 'warp' in that direction.

Bob.

I know I'm dating myself.... but the ole turnbuckle door supports used to be a solid rod, not a cable.

Now ya all know just how old I am...
