This is a ventless fireplace we use sparingly in an open area. The pilot lights and burns steadily and uniformly. When I turn the control knob from pilot to on the pilot remains on. When I turn on the switch to activate the burner nothing happens. It did burn for about 45 seconds the first time I turned it on but will not relight. I have cleaned it thoroughly and still no flame other than the pilot. Also when I turned it on the first time the smoke detector triggered briefly. Any thought or advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Fireplaces haven't just had a flame sensor for some decades. They also usually have an oxygen sensor in the same pilot assembly that fails over time requiring replacement. As the smoke detector worked, it could be the flame adjustment is off pressure and the sensor is saving your life.

Contact the manufacturer for replacement parts and have them installed by a qualified repair company that has the tools to check the gas pressure adjustments after a good cleaning.
