Well, after getting the drill bit issue settled, I have been steadily drilling game boards for Christmas gifts. So far, so good.
Then we get to the finishing touches...
The plan is to affix a few decals or stickers and then seal it all with a clear polyurethane coating.
On the first board we learned that stickers do not stick so well to wood.
But I see stuff all the time with decorative stickers under the sealer.
So what is the trick to getting the stickers to stay down?
As before, thanks in advance, Rick

I'm guessing a coat of finish before the sticker then more coats of clear over it.

Speaking from experience...
Give the stickers to a 4 yr old kid to put on...they'll NEVER come off...

A manufacturer may have some special technique that works, based upon experimentation. But I would give the wood one coat of poly, then the decal, then a couple more coats of poly.
By the way, try a latex poly for the top coats. I have used both Polycrylic and Diamond Finish with excellent results. You will have to test to be sure these do not damage the decal, and you will need to let an oil poly cure for a few days before you apply the decal. The benefit of the latex poly is that they dry clear and stay that way; that means the colors of the decal would look better than under an oil poly, which will turn amber.

Being an artsie, I've been watching this thread because "ya never know!" Wondering--should the poly be lightly sanded, say with fine grain paper for just a little grip, or not? *I'm thinking "not" but still wondering.... Thanks for asking this, Rick! As I don't have a 4 year old handy , I will likely need this advice someday!

Both oil and latex poly have to be sanded lightly with fine grit between coats if you wait more than a day typically. They usually tell you this on the can. I'd guess that it would help with the decal as well.

I've always wanted a bat house. Got plans you can share?

no, it was years back. but you can get free plans from a bunch of places including bat conversation internatinoal which I think is based in Austin, Tx.
adding to my troubles was the fact that I made them all out of sawmill lumber and cut out about a 2"*4" bat outline to glue to the front.

And did they attract and accomodate bats? I get the impression that there are plenty of bat house efforts that don't work out.
Sorry for the hijack.

I'll join the hijack and apologize, too! Yes, for some reason Bat Houses do attract those creepy critters and they supposably love them (but they like old carriage houses better!). I don't care that they eat 10,000 mosquitos a day, I'm scared to death of them! I'd gladly encounter a growling pitbull-doberman-rotwieller mix before I'd encounter a bat! OK, now to read some more posts to get the idea of covering my head out of my head Ewww!!

Thanks for the various replies.
I think part of the problem is the glue on the stickers.
IOW, I suspect the chemical reaction of glue that was intended to stick to paper being instead stuck on the ploy sealer is a big contribtor to the "won't stay stuck" edges.
My wife did a jury-rig tack job with straight pins until the edges stayed down, then we pulled the pins just before apply the second coat of sealer. The second coat dried and held the edges.
Sooo ... so far, so good. This will get me past Christmas on this particular project, but I'll be sure and know more about the application of decals before I tackle another round of homegrown game boards.
Finally, if some of the boards I've done flake up on the edges, I'll retrieve them from the friends and redo the decals (based on new knowledge -- and a very little bit of experience).

Use decals and lettering all the time. We get them cut by a sign writer who has a laser cut machine used for car pinstriping and sign work. Tell him what you need regarding sticking onto lacquer or poly, have any type face, any colour, any design, they scan into the puter and it cuts from the roll. Another way to do it is if you are using solid colour paint the letter colour first, apply the decal, paint the next colour then remove the decal. Only problems are usualy if you try to do the next operation too soon. Decals or Lettraset take a long time to dry properly before you can apply the next coat.
