Building Stairs
      #891665 - 07/23/10 03:44 PM

What is the proper way of dealing with the gap between my stair stringer and outside wall? The concrete foundations is wider by about 4 1/2".

As you can see there is a space between the outside stringer and the wall. Do I just block it out on each stud... My drawing call for a 2x6 on each side of the outside stringer. But that will only fill in part of the gap...

On a side note....

The shop is coming along. I am no Norm Abrams or Tommy Silva but I don't think it is going to fall down.

Rip a 2X6 to fit between the stringer and the wall and nail through the stringer into the 2X6. Put a cleat under the ripped 2X6 nailed to the studs and nail the 2X6 to the cleat.

This ripped 2X6 should be just behind the heel of the stringer where the riser and back of the tread intersect.

I don't know how else you could fill the space, unless you ran the treads and stringers past the carriage and to the wall. Not sure how that would look.

To finish your rafter ends:

Assume you're going to "finish" that portion of the interior wall? Do that first...

Also, what's happening with the floor in there? Poured concrete? If so, we always land stairs (and walls) on top of the finished concrete...

Nice PMS Shelter NC!

Thanks guys… I am having a hard time picturing how to do this..

A couple questions...

I think I understand what you are explaining..using the 2x6 next to the stringer...the question is, I about 4" away.. so do you mean to put the 2x6 face up?? Hopefully I am saying that right. Then do I run my treads and risers over to the wall?? My tread material is 1" …will the tread be OK if it is, so called, cantilever over the stringer by about 3"..

Also, will the inspector have problems with NON-PT wood sitting on concrete if I put some tar paper or shingles between the wood and concrete??

CC, the wall will be finished, but that is the 10yr timeline. I want to get this passed the framing inspection so I can weather it in and then take my time during the winter…Once the inspector sees the shear wall nailing…I can put my tyvek wrap on..

As far as the floor….it will be concrete…I don't have the money right now to get the floor poured. Being I didn't have money for the floor, we poured an interior footer for the wall next to the stairs and also for where the stringers will land. The footer was about 4" low from the top of the concrete floor. To make this work, I put 2- 2x12 PT, bolted to the footer, then the stringers are going to sit on top of the PT 2x12. (A kicker is also attached to these 2x12's). All this brought the landing of the stringers to the height of what will be the concrete.

Able…thanks for the link…being I don't work will at heights, I am going to rent a lift to get to my rafter ends at the top…. The lower section I can work from a 6' ladder….

I will have to say….I am having fun building this…but it is a LOT of work. Some things I could have done better..other things I am very happy with how it they came out….so all and all, I can't complain. I have learned a lot doing a project this size.

At this point, I would not think about this detail.

Get the shell completed, and the slab poured. Access the top level with a ladder for now - thats all you need.

BTW - Looking good

Exactly - first things first. Don't worry about that stair detail now. (Those stairs are going to come out when you pour the floor anyway...)

I don't know the answer to this, so throwing it out here. That interior stub wall that's shown on the left. The one with all the 2x's underneath... Are you planning on pouring AROUND the 2x's? I didn't think this was OK...

There's conc wall that the stud wall is sitting on. The finished slab will not engulf the studs.. if that's what your asking.

There's concrete under this wall here?
