According to the Dec 04 issue of Consumer Reports, the best rating went to the Makita MForce DK 1052DL (kit).
2. Dewalt
3. Milwaukee
4. Porter Cable
5. Bosch
6. Ridgid
7. Ryobi
8. Craftsman
9. Skil

I just bought the Ridgid 4 pack...despite the ratings, basically, because it was one hell of a deal. I use to like Milwaukee, until they moved their operation to Mexico. They're back now. I never like B-D, ergo, nor DeWalt...I hate yellow too. I have many corded Porter Cable, and even an American made 14.4 cordless from 1997, which still runs...sorta. Now that I hear that B-D owns them....hmmm. I Have a couple Ridgid corded tools, and like them. Note: I think that EVERY cordless tool is now made in china. So, it's anybodies guess as to quality.
might as well go with color! Hitachi has a nice green!

always interesting when the group talks power tools. bottom line is that it is a HUGE amount of a) personal preference and b) how you were treated where you bought yours. for example, I have delta unisaw, 10 radial arm, thickness planer and porter cable sliding compound miter, 19.2v drill/driver, and nailers. I've never had a lick of trouble with any of them other than the framing nailer and I just took that to the local porter cable place and they fixed it while I waited. bought a dewalt drill/driver couple of years back and it burned out within months and had a difficult time getting it replaced. so I just junked it and got porter cable 19.2 drill and other than a sprained wrist from not holding it tightly enough whilst using a 1" spade bit, it has been fantastic. circular saw wise, I would not trade my milwaukee for anything but I have a carpenter friend who says exactly the same about his makita. so, other than staying away from the junk (e.g. the low-end stuff that is too good to be true), advice is to get something that YOU are comfortable with and stick with it.

Re: Dewalt tools and cordless drill recommendations.

I'm a DIYer, not a pro. I wouldn't say I bleed yellow, but I may ooze it a bit. I believe DeWalt was part of a group purchase Black & Decker made within the last year or two. My 18v DeWalt drill has never let me down.

After numerous bad experiences with B&D products, I wrote them a letter recently telling them that I would not buy any of their products again. Did they respond? Of course not.

That being said, I would certainly buy DeWalt again, despite the family relationship (not their fault, right?). In addition, I bought two Price Pfister faucets this weekend, only to discover when I got them home that Price Pfister is also owned by B&D.

This boycott is not going well so far.
