i need to kill some grass, permantly or for a long time at least. It can be either a product or some kind of mix i have to make, but the grass will need to die overnight, quickly and last for awhile. Thanks for your help

This sounds nefarious. The easiest way for you to kill grass would be to put it in my yard, that always seems to work. Otherwise, let's say you were trying to write something in the grass, you could use bleach, or attach a spayer, like for pesticides to the hose and use diluted bleach to cover large areas. But don't tell your ex-girlfriend that I told you how to do that.

Some weed and brush killers would do that well. Nothing else would grow either, so the soil would not be useable for other plants for months.
NOthing is overnight, but some promise 24 or 48 hours.

I use Roundup It kills most anything, though it may take a few days.

I would use Roundup, and then cover the area with a tarp. The tarp would smuther (sp??) the grass and kill it faster than just spraying Roundup. Plus, the top layer of soil with the dead grass can be scraped up easily.

You didn't say why you want to do this - so I have to assume you aren't going to plant anything else there - and I have to assume you're killing your own grass - not a neighbor's.
For quick results - use a rototiller. Then spray the area with weed killer. There are many types - Roundup being one of the more popular brands.

Anyone "in the know" knows it's better to write on grass with a liquid fertilizer anyways.

While it wasn't that long ago that I was pulling pranks like you are now(I'm only 27), even I must admit this might be going a little too far. TP the kids trees or something. But if you scorch the lawn, nothing will grow there, possibly for years. This prank doesn't really get the kid so much as it does his parents. You see, if you egg his house or TP the trees, your proposed victim will be the one to have to clean it up, giving you even more satisfaction when you drive by the next day. If you scorch the lawn, well there really isn't anything they can do about it. don't get me wrong, it's a funny prank, but if you do it pick a very small area where only your victim and his parents will see it. Doing a little mischeif is always allright in my book, but destroying someones lawn for possibly years may get you into some legal issues. Just think twice before you do it is all I ask.

I think killing someone's lawn "permantly or for a long time" is more than a prank. It's criminal.
You might want to rethink your idea. I'm sure people here could come up with many good ideas that are less harmful - like MTeator's idea.

also do not egg a house or car. it really causes damage. pick a prank that is hilarious, but leaves no damage or a long term problem. at any rate, nothing is going to work that fast to kill the grass. think of something else.
come on posters there must be some things you guys did you can recommend that won't caus permanent damage, get his rear tanned or cost his parents money in the long run.

Ok Cowboy, I've gotta agree with the rest of the folks on here, that's not really a prank to kill the grass, it's really more destructive, and when you become destructive you've crossed that fine line and nobodies gonna really laugh over it, they're just gonna get hurt and ticked off.
So, that said, I'll tell you a few pranks that are pretty harmless, yet fun. If your freind has a car you can fill it up to the ceiling with newspaper, just wad it up and throw it in, we did this to a freind and they couldn't even get in the front seat. We also taped newspaper across their front and back doors, so when they opened up the doors all they saw was newspaper. Of course you could tipi the yard, bushes and trees. Heck, that's alot of fun just throwing tp all over the place. You could also get some whip cream and draw faces or words in the grass
Remember, whatever you do it's gotta be humerous to both parties.

If you want to write on the lawn, and you want an immediate effect, use marking paint.

I like the "Marking Paint" idea!!! Immediate results AND no legalities.......SOMEONE has to own the property....the state???
TRUST me...you get in heaps of trouble if you ruin or cause ANY permanent altering situation on state property...which a school is! Ask my daughter.

Good point Tindlewood - but I'd be careful about "no legalities". Defacing property is also against the law - even if the clean up is relatively easy!

diesel oil would carry with it the costs of environmental remediation. Not cheap, I work for an environmental engineering company. No offence, Boat, but this is the worst idea yet. Diesel would persist for years, and depending on how deep it migrated could cost up to hundreds of thousands of dollars to clean up. And it carries definate jail time if one is caught "disposing of it improperly"
