Is Pwr Co. the cause of my brownouts/dim lights?
      #892379 - 07/28/10 04:01 PM

OK. We are so frustrated at this point. Over the past 8 years we have lost a hot tub, refrigerator, computers and 2x each season we have a blown A/C capacitor. Our house lights go to dim frequently and remain there. Then there were the brown outs that were so bad we would shut everything off for hours or days in the house.

We have had the electric company come and previously they said no problems. Two years ago we had a large storm with lengthy outages. The local pwr company was assisting elsewhere and another power company came to fix all the downed lines. They also had to replace a tranformer at our sub-station. Low and behold the brown outs stopped!
Still though the lights dimmed but not that bad.

Now though the dimming is getting worse. Sometimes the lights go dim for no apparent reason and remain that way for days. When the well pump kicks on they dim, sometimes, not always, they dim when the A/C kicks on. Pump, A/C, hot tub and all other large items in the house are on their own dedicated circuit. We have had the electrical checked and have found nothing.

I took advantage of another storm recently and called the power company due to the dimming. The line attached to the house was not in 'bad' shape, not perfect they said and they surprisingly cleaned up all connections to the house. They said if we still had problems then it must be in our house. But no-one can find a single problem.

Can it be the power supply? If it is how do I prove it?

As a side point, ever since they reconnected the lines two months ago our power consumption has increased about 25% from the previous years June and July usage.

How far from your transformer on the pole to your panel? What power company? Voltage drop is the issue How many houses share your transformer? What is the calculated load of the house? Could be an accumulation of things. Like Johny 5 need input.

The transformer that was replaced is in the substation about 5 miles from our house. There are 10 houses on my road that are serviced by 1 transformer that is about 900 feet from our home. The length of the line from the pole to our house is another approx 200 feet.

I would say the problem is the total distance from low voltage side of transformer (+- 1200 feet) to hot tub or other large loads is going to cause some problems. We only allow 250 feet before we make the customer put a pad mount transformer in their yard. how many of the 10 have hot tubs?

Just us for the hot tub.
But I did forget to mention we have an areator septic system that also has an additional lift station for discharge. 7 of the houses have the same aereator and 3 of us have the additional lift pump.
We have a lake at the end of our road that has 5 areators in it and I am not sure if our transformer serves it or not.
The power company is The Illuminating Co aka First Energy Corp.
