So I installed a new dishwasher a couple months ago. House never had one prior. I ran the discharge line to the fitting on the existing disposal unit under the sink. I spoke with a pro local plumber and he said I don't need an airgap setup here. So I looped the discharge hose up then down to the fitting as directed...
Whenever the unit runs, I get this nasty odor coming out of the sink drains (dual sink). Not really sure how to describe the smell. It's sorta sewer-like....but not. Running the water doesn't seem to help. Usually the only way to make it go away is for the unit to be off for awhile or for me to dump some dish soap in the sink and "suds it up" to mask the smell. Whats going on?
Thanks.

If the drain line is looped up high and connected to the bottom of the counter does it then slope down below the disposal connection and then loop up before connecting or does it slope directly down to the disposal like Figure 2 in this diagram .
Could be your drains are also coated with a biofilm (black stinky guck). Do you notice if the water level rises in the vertical piping of the other sink when this is happening.

The dishcharge line loops up to near the top then goes down right to the disposal fitting. It does not loop down just before the fitting.
I have not noticed any water coming out of the other drain when this happens although water has gurgled out of it a few times when I turned on the disposal unit....
Also, there is no seperate vent for this sink. Only one main plumbing vent for the whole house (built in the 20's, although kitchen remodel is newer).

When you run the dishwasher stop up the sink that does not have the disposal on it and fill with a decent amount of water. See if the smell still eminates from the disposal side. If there is no smell then it may be that your trap seal (sink without disposal)) is being pulled during the dishwasher discharge cycles. After that happens everytime the unit discharges (during that wash cycle) it may be pushing some of the air that is in your waste pipe up into the kitchen. You may need to install an AAV under your sink since you have no vent for that fixture.
