Just ruffling some feathers
First it was just supposed to be healthcare reform worked out live on C-span, then it done behind closed doors, then it became full of backroom deals, now it even involves student loans. How they relate to healthcare?
Quote:
Under White House pressure to act swiftly, House and Senate Democratic leaders reached for agreement Friday on President Barack Obama’s health care bill, sweetened suddenly by fresh billions for student aid and a sense that breakthroughs are at hand...
The decision to add far-reaching student aid changes to the bill had its roots in obscure parliamentary rules governing the Senate’s debate of the legislation. But House Democrats and the White House quickly seized on it as a way to advance a top administration priority that lacks the 60 votes needed to clear the Senate otherwise.
The measure would require the government to originate student loans, closing out a role for banks and other private lenders who charge a fee. Obama proposed taking the savings and plowing it into higher Pell Grants that go to needy college students.
Officials said that under current estimates, the change would free as much as $66 billion over a decade, although Pelosi indicated she wanted it spread beyond Pell Grants to other education programs.

You'll notice I advocate that Social Security, welfare, Medicare, Medicaid, FEHBP, and all social programs be rescinded in favor of entitlement to a good meal each day and universal health care; but no more than that.
The only catch is that the beer be NON-ALCOHOLIC, as there should be no alcoholic and drug rehab to pay for.

My sigh wasn't directed at you... It was the continued Congressional use of earmarks that is so overwhelming and upsetting to me.

I knew that, but I did think it was directed at there being another healthcare reform bill thread being started. I'd rather no reform than bad reform. I guess by adding this college funding component to the bill, it can be used in campaign season against non supporting incumbents to say "Joe Schmo voted to take your college dreams away by killing x billions of dollars in tuition grants"

Like Al, these earmarks and pork added to bills is, IMHO, the wrong thing to do.
It is all bribes for the power grab for votes. "I'm not giving you a yes vote....unless."
Instead of doing the business of the American people, it ends up being "I'll show you mine, if you show me yours".
BTW, isn't that another "take over" of for-profit business? Private lenders charge a fee to cover the costs of defaults, and administration. What does the gub'ment propose to do? Toss losses to the taxpayers?
