I think I can replace the wood on a broken stair tread but I don't know how carpet is installed on stairs. Is it in a section for each step so I could just remove the carpet over the step or is it one long piece of carpet? I'm sure it's easy to guess which one I'm hoping it is. If it's one long piece is there an easier way than to remove all the carpet on the stairs?

It "should" be one long piece (perhaps 2)...It will be glued and/or stapled to the wooden tread. You can use a sharp utility knife to cut the carpet just below the nose of the step above the one you are replacing and a second cut just below the nose of the tread you are replacing...replace the tread and reinstall the carpeting .

For measuring purposes I always allowed one piece for stairs, but there could be pieces--look carefully for a seam between a tread and a riser, sometimes they're tucked under a bullnose-they're usually pretty easy to spot but a flashlight will help. If so, take apart the seam and go from there. Hoping that seam is very near your broken step!
*If you have problems or are a chicken, call a carpet installer (best bet) or a flooring store and see if you can have an installer remove and reinstall the carpet. Small jobs like that are often a lot cheaper than you think.
