Cheap dimmer. A different brand might work differently.

Lutron dimmers especially the Decora series styles use a TRIAC as opposed to an SCR internally for dimming. TRIACS are inherently MUCH quieter than SCRS. There will not be any marking on the package as to what is inside but from personal experience I know this is what is used.

Cheap rotary or slide dimmers that do not illuminate the bulbs until you are about halfway through the travel of the control and then come on with a flash are SCR dimmers. A quality TRIAC dimmer will keep the filament "excited" (a very faint glow) that keeps the filament warm). This also helps to dramatically extend the lamp life as opposed to having the bulb go from full off to halfway on or full on.

On cheap dimmers you can also hear the filament vibrating.

Fantasic information on Triacs and SCRs!

I have a question about the stereo interference:
Is it coming through on a normally static-quiet source,
like a CD player or TV? Or is it coming through on
the AM radio band? There may be electrical wiring
problems if it's coming through non-radio paths.

If it's on AM, there are ways to reduce it a lot.
Also, not that the noise is worst partway dimmed.
Lights all-on or all-off has a lot less noise.

I once considered using a "Variac" as a dimmer.
Those are bulky adjustable transformers...no static.
