Wire Size

I would like to know what size wire I should use for a panel that I'm installing in a shop on a farm 200 feet away from the utility company's meter. The panel will be 200 amps and will provide power for some lighting, about 6 outlets, and a welder.

here's a chart to give you an idea and note the sizes for copper or aluminum.

200FT with a true capability for using 200A, I would recommend 4/0 copper. It needs to be that large of wire due to voltage drop for 200A. If you ever think, even remotely of using the full 200A, I would go with the 4/0. In installing a panel I size the wire like for a full load.

HG, that is a good link. It has a nice material list and is also from my state.
