bathroom vent fan
      #866139 - 02/08/10 01:39 PM

My bathroom vent fan in the ceiling is making noise now after 10 years of use.Must be the bearing going.I took the cover off and a drum like fan is exposed. It has a metal housing around it.I can spin it with my fingers and it is quiet. I can push it up and down about 1 inch. There is a screw in the middle of it.What is the best way to take this apart and fix it.If I can get at the motor maybe I can bring it to a fan/motor shop and get it fixed or replaced.

On many of those fans the whole fan assy comes out. There should be four screws holding a metal plate on that is the mount for the fan. The fan should also have a plug on it for easy removal.

What dev said, but the fan blades likely just need cleaning and maybe a drop of oil on the motor shaft. They get awfully crusty, and that throws the balance all out of whack.

If you have a typical Broan bath fan, the metal motor plate can probably be released with the removal of one screw close to one of the edges. Then, the motor plate will pivot down and out. Again, depending on the model, I've had some success at replacing the motor and re-using the mounting plate. Sure saves a lot of grief trying to replace the whole fan.

Sometimes I find a replacement motor, sometimes I just buy a new fan and take the motor out of the kit.

Good luck. Bob.
