Still doesn't make sense to me. If the device is rated for 240 volts and you open one leg you have 0 volts across it. We are talking about a 240 device not a 120/240 device.

Once again IF the controller is solid state (NOT a relay)then the load may exceed the design voltage of the triac in the controller. If it is a MECHANICAL relay then no problem.

The voltage across a switch is NEVER 0 volts. That is an impossibility. In the OFF state, a triac will have 120 volts on both sides (the anode and the cathode) if used in a 240 volt circuit. Some triacs and control circuitry are not rated for anything above 120volts.
