Temporary patio
      #865731 - 02/06/10 11:04 AM

We moved to Arizona about a year ago, and our new house has really horrible grass in a small area of the backyard. We want to get rid of it because it looks bad and we don't really need grass in AZ (too much upkeep). However, we can't afford to make an entire patio there right now with pavers, etc. Is there anything we could put down temporarily to make a patio that would serve as a base later on for patio pavers? Thanks

Well... Typical paver patios require a base material of about 4" of Class 2 crushed limestone (on top of geotextile fabric), compacted. On top of that is a 1" thick layer of course sand, and then the pavers themselves.

Before the limestone is laid in place, the site needs to be excavated deep enough so the finished elevation (limestone, sand, pavers) is where you want it.

So if you were to just do the compacted limestone (with the fabric underneath), you'd have a decent temporary surface to use. The problem is your elevation for this will likely be lower than surrounding grade, resulting in a trap for debris and rain water. And you'd likely be tracking limestone dust into the house...

One option then would be to design things such that the compacted limestone elevation is at current grade, then in the future, add your sand and pavers to this. You'd then need to transition down to existing grade around the outside of the patio either with fill and/or with some form of landscaping. You'd still have the limestone tracking into the house problem however.

I know it sounds a bit tacky, but why not lay down some cheap outdoor carpet? You know, the astro-turf stuff? That should last a season or two..

the base for your eventual patio would differ relative to where you live. where I am, it is crushed aggregate for a base of around 6". you would then lay restraining around the outsides, then an inch of sand, then pavers.then more sand tossed on top and broomed into the cracks. best done all at once, since you will have a depression the thickness of the pavers even after you put in the aggregate and sand. so perhaps the indo/outdoor would be just fine.

This would be a super easy solutio - except that we have a bobcat that has been visiting our backyard (and using it as a little box). Might be difficult to clean off of carpet..

If the bobcat can't dig in the dirt, it won't pottie there. it won't pottie on the carpet.
