Annual/Perennial, thats a good question, Boyes!
I got my information from my Big Book (Readers Digest Illustrated Guide to Gardening) but Fran is an expert!
I Googled and couldn't find any information about the leaf shapes, but my Google-skills stink. The one thing I found Googling is that "most" Gerberas are considered perennials in Zone 8 and warmer; since that's Fran's zone, they would be Perennial regardless of the leaf shape. At any rate, up here in the North, we need to treat them as an annual anyways unless we overwinter them inside.
When I go to the Plant Farm in Spring, I'll try to remember to bend the Master Gardener's brain about the leaf shapes as you got me curious now!
Fran, my daffies are under a foot of hard crusty snow.....I'm so jealous!
Liz

BOTH ARE RIGHT. it depends on where you live. some perennials become annuals if they live in an area that is too cold in the winter. and vice versa, some annuals in cold areas, become perennials in warmer areas. i can grow hibiscus all year long, morristown can't. that's why they have gardening zones and tell you that a certain plant is hardy thru a particular zone.
