I'm looking for remote control cars on Ebay. I see various scales, 1:10, 1/18, 1/12, etc. Can someone give me a complete table of the sizes and what they mean as far as length of the car. The child doesn't want some matchbook size car so something around 10-12 inches long. Explain these scales and sizes. Thanks.
revision: 1/24 Scale Ferrari F430 Challenge R/C Racing Electric Car and it says Product size: 18.8 x 7.7 x 4cm 18.8 centimeters long is 7.4 inches so not that long. Maybe a 1/18 or 1/12 or 1/10 scale is what I'm looking for, if anyone has any good way to compare scale to length.

If I recall correctly, the scale refers to the units of measurement of the model compared to the real thing. Thus, a 1:24 scale means that 1 unit of model measurement equals 24 units of the real thing.
If you choose the units to be inches, then, 1:24 means 1 inch of model represents 24 inches of real car. That's pretty small model when it comes to something inherently small like a car.
Another way to think about it is that a 1:1 scale represents a full size model. 1:2 represents a half scale model.

Divide the length of the actual vehicle by the scale number to get the lenght of the scale vehicle.
If a Ferrari is 16' long and it's 1:12 scale, the scale car will be 16" long
If it were 1:24 scale, the scale car would be 8" long.
Hope that helps.
