Thatch on lawn
      #839179 - 09/06/09 11:52 AM

Have any of you gardeners ever used a liquid
called "THATCH ATTACK" on your lawns.
The label states it helps to decay thatch.

I bot 2 bottles from a local nursery 2/3 years
ago and used one bottle2 years ago but do not
recall any improvement is eliminating thatch.

The manufacturing company is called GREEN EARTH
and it is used with a garden hose spray attachment.

This product may just be manufactured in Canada
but I am not sure.

Anyone ever used it or something similar????

Quote:

The primary component of thatch is turfgrass stems and roots. It accumulates as these plant parts buildup faster than they breakdown. Thatch problems are due to a combination of biological, cultural, and environmental factors. Cultural practices can have a big impact on thatch. For example, heavy nitrogen fertilizer applications or overwatering frequently contribute to thatch, because they cause the lawn to grow excessively fast. Avoid overfertilizing and overwatering. Despite popular belief, short clippings dropped on the lawn after mowing are not the cause of thatch buildup. Clippings are very high in water content and breakdown rapidly when returned to lawns after mowing, assuming lawns are mowed on a regular basis (not removing more than one-third of the leaf blade).

Soil compaction is also a cause. A good aeration and a bit top dressing with good soil will help. I don't believe there's a magic bullet for the problem.

I used a bottle of something like that a few years ago. I'm not sure it did any good. Some say you can get the same results with something like baby shampoo. I would spend the time and money on aeration and a top dressing with a good compost if you really have issues with thatch and/or soil compaction.

Baby shampoo?? I think you have been reading the jerry Baker books. Yes there was a recipe in there for thatch. I forgot the ingrediants but can go find the book if needed. I know his compost tonic worked great this spring.
