I would avoid using ash from briquettes in a veggie garden, ornamentals, possibly. Between the binders used and waxy petro-chemicals in the "fast starting" types... not something I'd want in my organic veggies. Most gardens like a small dose of wood ash, though.

You could save them for use on an icy drive or sidewalk.

I dump 'em in the shallow spots in the alley.

Like Darlene said, WOOD ashes are good for gardens, charcoal, not good.

Yep! WOOD ashes do a fine job against slugs. (Jeesch, I hate slugs)Just lightly sprinkle around the plants you want to protect.

Seconding Darlene's advice with proof

Next door neighbor had a slug problem. I'd never seen one before and she had to SHOW me what they looked like! We both had hostas, which are slug candy. Only a chain link fence between our yards.

I used my woodashes purely for enriching the soil and easy disposal, but discovered they were good slug repellants, too as that was the only posie-practice I did that Mrs Dahl didn't. (and yes, I started sharing them with Mrs Dahl!)

I've also sprinkled wood ashes on plants that are getting eaten by bugs with good success.

DO be careful not to use too many or you'll turn your ground into cement, done that.....And never spread them on a windy day unless you're planning on heading to the shower afterwards. Done that, too
