It was a hot muggy night. The sky was cloudy but with pockets of blue still managing to break their way through. It looked like it probably wouldn’t rain for some time. So Scholastica slipped into her sneakers, grabbed her back pack and headed out for the church garden. The front of the rectory still needed to be weeded. A couple weeks ago Scholastica had ripped out some of the small bushes. Gone were the bushes only to be replaced by weeds. Under normal circumstances the job would be done in five minutes. But some bright genius decided to put up an iron fence in front of the bushes to warn drivers not to park too close. The only entrance into the garden is a small gate in front of a statue of Jesus. A couple small plants are right behind the gate so when the gardener creeps in, she must be very careful not to step on them and lithely squeeze around the statue to the back of the holly and the climbing hydrangea and up against the rectory building. Finally there, Scholastica crouched down and began to weed. “OW!!! Son of a B****!” she cried as some dried holly leaves stabbed her fingers. She quickly finished the area and began to try and figure how she was to reach the next small patch. She had to either squeeze between the building and the next couple bushes OR push her way between the iron fence and the bush.

She reached down to grab one last weed before she made her decision. A loud CRACK echoed from the sky! ‘SH@!$T!!! DA*& YOU!!!” Scholastica cried! Stuck between the building, the statue and the *&%^&^ bushes with the rains pounding down on her Scholastica tried dodging under one of the bushes for cover. No good! Unlike trees…bushes are no good for relief from a drenching rain. She grabbed her backpack which had been stuck under another bush and squeezed her way around the shrubs and through the fence. Free at last! Free at last! The rains were relentless! The rectory was closed and the church locked up! Home was 3 blocks away! *(&^*&^()!! She cried and raced to the one source of cover….the shed. Standing between her garden tools and buckets of steaming earth she watched the rains pound the ground.

Hollies beware! Don't mess with me. I ripped out the boxwoods, I can rip you out too! Grrr
