Grain-raising paint

What ever happened to the Testors Airplane dope that I used to paint models with as a kid? Can anyone recommend a similar craft paint, or at least a paint that does not raise the grain like the acrylic paint that I have been buying at the local craft store?

The "Dope" you speak of is Lacquer. Seems it's available as a Clear sanding sealer

Testors website

Every coating will raise the grain of most woods. Lacquer dries so fast it minimizes that problem, but it is difficult to work with and the fumes are "intoxicating".

Try a sanding sealer, light sanding with 220 grit(if needed) and continue using the Acrylic hobby paints.

Yep, Boz is right as usual.. I remember as a kid, building model planes, getting a bit dizzy using it.. I believe you can buy spray cans of clear lacquer..

Is that why they called it dope?
