1st question:
Anorton's earlier thread made me wonder if I should ask about ants in my vegetable garden. I don't have any mounds other than the single hole small ones, and I've just left them alone. Will they become a problem for any of my plants?
I'm in North Florida, and I haven't seen any crawling pests. I was wondering if the ants may be keeping them at bay. I expected to see some crawlies by now.
I just did a small plot as this is my first one. I have squash, potatoes, tomatoes (no fruit yet), green beans, carrots, brussel sprouts, onions, and a couple cauliflower.
Also, being a newbie dummy, I didn't know about 'seed' potatoes, or that I need to plant potatoes that can handle our heat, so I just cut up some store bought red potatoes and planted them. They grew pretty good so far, but I think the heat is getting to them. I've mounded them up about 12 inches, and the plants have grown about a foot above that, but I have one on which the leaves are starting to turn yellow, and they haven't blossomed yet.
2nd question: does no blossom mean no spuds?

Keep mounding them spuds... If they're growing, theres 'taters.
I've never had ants hurt my garden. The only problem I've ever heard of was they "milk" aphids for the sweet. No aphids, no problem. Aphids, BTW are very destructive, but can be countered with a spray of soapy water. Check your plants for tiny, soft bodied, green, crawly things. OH! Florida folks should watch for them dang Fire Ants!

Sounds like your garden is doing GREAT, Kerk! BOUGHT green bean seeds today, will be a few more weeks before I can plant them.
Can't help with the potato question because potatoes just don't like my soil--plant 'em and pull up ONE LOUSY POTATO PER PLANT. Not worth the space.
As far as ants, like Darlene said, as long as they aren't those fireants (glad we don't have them up here!), ants usually don't pose a problem in the garden so don't fret about 'em. The nests probably areate the soil!

My resident "garden toad" loves ants! Maybe that's why I don't have much of a population.
