Bathroom lamp shorted
      #630663 - 04/07/07 01:42 PM

My bathroom lamp does not work .I replaced the on off switch but it still only reads across the switch terminals 10v or 0v when i switch the switch.Must be an open in the circut someplace. Anyway my next thing to check is the over head bathroom lamp. The wires to the Bulbs have gotten toasty over the years(don,t use more that 60w bulbs). And I am having a hard time trying to take the 60 year old lamp apart.I took the glass dome cover off to expose the bulbs and under plate and there is a 4 holes for screws. I loosened or removed the 2 screws inside and tried to twist and pull down inside but nothing gives. Those screws are there for something, maybe i need to grab the outside the fixture and pull on that as maybe it is stuck on from painting over the years. How can I get this lamp apart.

I think you have answered your own question...after 60 years there is likely to be lots of good oil based paint gluing that fixture in place...you could try using a utility knife to free the edges around the fixture because if you pull the fixture without scoring the paint it might result in a bit of a patch job that you might otherwise get lucky enough to avoid.

Run a knife around the base to cut through the paint buildup. The fixture should then twist and the screwheads will come out of the keyhole slots. Be gentle though to avoid damaging the wires if they are crunchy.

If the swirch is making then you would only read 0 or very low volts across it. What is the reading at the light? That would be more helpful.
