I was given an older model 10" Craftsman Radial Arm Saw. Supposedly works great. Problem is there is no key for it. It isn't like current models where the key is in the switch. The key is seperate from the switch, off to the side. There is no model# on the saw or base anywhere. Does anybody have any suggestions as to where I could find a key? Can this key be bypassed? I called Sears and they couldn't help unless I have an Model #. Any input would be great!

The key should be easy to bypass. It's just a switch that keeps power from the motor. It'll have 2 wires going to the key switch. Simply connect them together, and that switch will be disabled, leaving only the master power switch. Alternatively, a key switch from any electrical supply house could be installed, keeping the safety feature.
Should be easy to make this work.

I too have an older Craftsman Radial Arm saw. Mine has a key in the middle of the arms end with the on and off switches on either side of the key. Is this how yours is set up? If so, I will let you know what the model number is and have a look at the key.

Sounds like the same saw. On mine the key slot is in the front of the arm. The switch is to the left of the key slot. Any model #'s are worth a try. Thanks....

I may have been confused by the details here. I'm familiar with 2 Craftsman keyed switches, none of which sound like what you've got:
the older machines used a round headed key with 2 pins that plugged into the switch. When the switch was on, the key was retained by a clear plastic shield over half the switch. The key head is flush with the switch when inserted. There's only one switch on this style, the key fits in it.
The newer machines use a rectangular headed key with a single tang. It forms the switch toggle handle when inserted. This style is common on many manufacturer's machines, including Craftsman's relabels.
It sounds from your description like you've got separate keyswitches and power switch. Is this so, or is yours one of the 2 above?

On my saw the key and switch are not together. The switch is just a solid plastic "flip" switch and the key has it's own slot seperate from the switch. On the front of the saw, it is marked with "key" with a round hole under it. The switch is to the left of the key.

JasonB, Your switches are both newer than the Craftsman on the radial arm saw. I have rectangular one on my band saw and have seen the yellow "button" on the red switch on F-i-l's newer Craftsman radial arm saw.

If it's a separate switch, you should be able to bypass or replace it like I outlined in my first response. It's just 2 switches in series, the key switch closes to energise the on/off switch. You could remove the key switch all together, or replace it with a new key tumbler type switch. Alternatively, take a photo of the saw and switch to the SEars parts depot, sometimes they'll have an old fellow there that knows enuf to find you the part. On the phone, theyre useless without a part #...

There should be a model/# tag somewhere on the unit. If not, as suggested by others, it is just a switch and should be easily defeated. Those "keys" were just to keep young hands out, not old pros.

Just to follow up on the model of the radial arm saw...My saw does not show any model or serial number either other than Craftsman 10"???? Oh well, I tried. I will ask F-i-l. I bought it off him and he may even have the booklet tucked away some where.
