the oatey gasket does have an extension into the drain hole.

i used the fluidmaster one in my other bathroom, about 5yrs ago, and it works great. i like that fernco one too. another possibility if the gasket fails me.

bob: evidently, i did manage to get the old flange clean enough. i used silicone II last night and it stuck right off with a tight seal.

thanks everyone for your input. i'll post again after i install the toilet tonight; to let you know if it leaks or not, using the gasket.
