Temporary patio

We moved to Arizona about a year ago, and our new house has really horrible grass in a small area of the backyard. We want to get rid of it because it looks bad and we don't really need grass in AZ (too much upkeep). However, we can't afford to make an entire patio there right now with pavers, etc. Is there anything we could put down temporarily to make a patio that would serve as a base later on for patio pavers? Thanks
