so i pruned some roses today. i got a wee bit overzealous and some are almost to the ground and some are only 6" off the ground. i pruned some to the main trunk or nearby depending how dead or how thorny they were. there were a lot of little root stalks and stringy shoots. did i do this too early in the season? we are still getting some frost here (in northern cal) and it probably gets to about 40F at night. the neighbors roofs are frosty and some of the grass is, but not too bad. there were little buds on some of the stalks and there were a few large stalks (like 1.5" in diameter) with crazy dragon claws that i cut off. is it possible to kill them this way? i know it's really hard to kill a rose but since i rent and they are the pride of my landlord i don't want to ruin them. i suppose maybe i'll ask if he wants to do this next year...:)
i pruned them last year, but i don't recall when and i think i may have pruned them harder this year. last year they survived just fine.
