Ants and veggies........problem?

1st question:

Anorton's earlier thread made me wonder if I should ask about ants in my vegetable garden. I don't have any mounds other than the single hole small ones, and I've just left them alone. Will they become a problem for any of my plants?

I'm in North Florida, and I haven't seen any crawling pests. I was wondering if the ants may be keeping them at bay. I expected to see some crawlies by now.

I just did a small plot as this is my first one. I have squash, potatoes, tomatoes (no fruit yet), green beans, carrots, brussel sprouts, onions, and a couple cauliflower.

Also, being a newbie dummy, I didn't know about 'seed' potatoes, or that I need to plant potatoes that can handle our heat, so I just cut up some store bought red potatoes and planted them. They grew pretty good so far, but I think the heat is getting to them. I've mounded them up about 12 inches, and the plants have grown about a foot above that, but I have one on which the leaves are starting to turn yellow, and they haven't blossomed yet.

2nd question: does no blossom mean no spuds?
